World of Warcraft Item Upgrades Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats. Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount. Item Level The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high dependent on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded. The level of an item is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all tooltips of items. It is also used to limit how much PvP gear players can use since PvP is not available at a lower level. The average item level is listed on the character sheet. Using the item level can help players compare the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a measure of the item's condition and its quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done by using the level of the item. On PC, you are able to view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat. There are a variety of theories on the method by which the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the level is a number derived from a formula that calculates how much an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is typically close to the actual Blizzard item level. However, this isn't the only factor that can affect an item's ilvl as the level of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances. Item Stats The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in different ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being “the best.” The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level. Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices. Another method to alter the stats on an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can do things like give the item extra damage, add a special capability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving an exclusive name to the item. Currently, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circles arrows. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling. Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat within that range unless they are an exclusive item, or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid. Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis, and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time. Item Luck The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items, the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial in early game runs because players tend to put the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains. In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances, which increase with each new level of item. It is also possible to be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing. Armor, shields and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to give +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item, up to 140. Moreover some items, such as the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be bought in the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients. Item Failure Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are cash shop items which allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails. The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%.. The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the luck of the item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases this chance by five percent. Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
